When you need it
What legal paternity testing is for
If a court, government agency, or attorney is involved, a peace-of-mind home test is not enough. Legal paternity testing follows strict chain-of-custody so the result can be entered as evidence.
Court & child support
The most common reason families order legal paternity testing in Loudoun. Our signed lab affidavit is designed to meet court evidentiary standards.
Custody disputes
Establish or disprove biological relationship in family-court proceedings. Confirm with your attorney that legal (not at-home) testing is required.
Immigration cases
AABB-accredited collection accepted by USCIS and US embassies. Results are shipped under chain-of-custody directly to the requesting authority.
Estate & inheritance
Establish biological relationship for inheritance or probate matters when documentary evidence is insufficient.
Chain-of-custody
What happens at every legal DNA collection
The procedural rigor is what separates a legal test from a peace-of-mind home kit. Here is the exact process we follow every time.
Schedule the appointment
All required participants — alleged father, child, and (optionally) mother — must be present together or at coordinated appointments. Call us at 571-500-7030 to schedule.
Identity verification
Each adult presents government-issued photo ID. The custodial parent consents on behalf of minor children. We document identity in front of you and record the chain-of-custody form.
Cheek-swab collection
A trained collector swabs the inside of each participant’s cheek for about 60 seconds. The samples are sealed and packaged in your presence, then shipped under tracked custody to our AABB-accredited reference lab.
Lab analysis & signed affidavit
The lab processes samples on the same timeline as a peace-of-mind test — typically 3 to 5 business days after receipt. Results are reported with a signed laboratory affidavit suitable for court submission.

FAQ
Legal paternity questions, answered
Common questions about court-admissible DNA testing. Don’t see yours? Call us at 571-500-7030.
What makes a paternity test "legal" or court-admissible?
A legal paternity test follows strict chain-of-custody — each participant presents government-issued photo ID, the collection is performed in our office by a trained collector, samples are sealed and tracked, and results are reported with a signed affidavit. Home-collected paternity tests cannot be used in court because identity cannot be verified.
Who needs to be present for a legal paternity test?
At minimum, the alleged father and the child must each provide a cheek-swab sample in our office. Including the mother strengthens the statistical result but is not strictly required. All adults present must show photo ID. For minor children, the custodial parent must consent.
How long do legal paternity test results take?
Results are typically ready in 3 to 5 business days after the lab receives all samples. The lab processes legal tests on the same timeline as peace-of-mind tests — the difference is procedural (chain-of-custody, ID verification, signed affidavit), not technical.
Is your DNA testing accepted by USCIS for immigration cases?
Yes. We are an AABB-accredited collection facility and our laboratory partner is AABB-accredited. Immigration DNA results are shipped under chain-of-custody directly to USCIS or the requesting US embassy. We do not release immigration results to the patient.
How much does a legal paternity test cost in Ashburn?
See the test detail page for current pricing. Legal paternity is more expensive than peace-of-mind paternity because of the chain-of-custody procedures, ID verification, and signed affidavit. Both follow the same science.
Can the test be used for child support or custody court cases?
Yes — that is the most common reason clients order a legal paternity test in Loudoun County. The signed lab affidavit and chain-of-custody documentation are designed to satisfy court evidentiary standards. Your attorney can confirm the specific requirements for your case.
