Understanding the DOT Drug
A DOT drug test is the federally regulated 5-panel urine drug screen required for CDL drivers and other safety-sensitive roles in industries regulated by the US Department of Transportation. The panel screens for amphetamines, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), and THC (marijuana) using a strict federal collection and reporting protocol (49 CFR Part 40).
At our Ashburn lab, a DOT drug test is $79 and follows full chain-of-custody using the federal Custody and Control Form (CCF). Bring photo ID and any paperwork your employer or Designated Employer Representative (DER) has issued. Walk-ins are accepted Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Negatives are typically reported the same business day; non-negatives are confirmed by GC/MS or LC/MS at the certified reference lab and return in 24 to 72 hours.
A Medical Review Officer (MRO) reviews any non-negative result before it is reported to the employer, reconciling against legitimate prescription medications the employee discloses. DOT-regulated testing differs from non-DOT employer testing in collection procedure, paperwork, and reporting chain — a 10-panel cannot substitute for a DOT 5-panel even though it covers the same substances.

What to expect
From check-in to results — what your visit looks like
Most visits take under 15 minutes. Here’s the full arc, start to finish.
How to prepare
No fasting and no medication changes. Drink water normally so you can produce an adequate urine sample at check-in. Bring photo ID and any chain-of-custody paperwork your employer or DER has issued. Have a list of prescription medications available — the MRO will need it if any non-negative requires reconciliation.
During your visit
The collector verifies your ID and the CCF, then directs you to a private restroom following standard DOT collection procedures (no flushing, water turned off, blue toilet dye). You provide the sample, the collector measures temperature and volume, and the sample is sealed in front of you, signed off, and packaged for shipment to the certified reference lab.
Getting your results
Negatives are typically reported the same business day. Non-negatives are sent to confirmation testing — confirmed results return in 24 to 72 hours and are reviewed by an MRO before reporting to your DER. The CCF and the lab report together satisfy DOT documentation requirements.

FAQ
DOT Drug Test — what people ask
Specific questions about the dot drug test. For anything not covered, call 571-500-7030.
Is a 10-panel drug test acceptable for DOT?
No. DOT requires the federal 5-panel collected and processed under DOT-specific chain-of-custody on the federal CCF. A 10-panel covers the same substances plus others, but cannot satisfy the DOT regulatory requirement.
What if I take a prescription that could trigger a positive?
Bring your prescription bottle or a pharmacy printout to the visit. Any non-negative result is reviewed by a Medical Review Officer who reconciles the result against documented prescriptions before reporting to your employer.
Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?
Walk-ins are accepted Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for employer-based drug testing. If your employer specified a window, follow their instructions; otherwise, arrive during open hours with your CCF and photo ID.
