What this test screens for

Understanding the High-Sensitivity CRP

The High-Sensitivity CRP Test (hs-CRP) measures very low levels of C-reactive protein — a protein the liver produces in response to inflammation. While a standard CRP test is used to detect acute infection or illness, the high-sensitivity version is designed to detect lower-level chronic inflammation associated with cardiovascular risk.

At our Ashburn lab, the hs-CRP test is $79 and uses a blood draw. No fasting is required for CRP alone, but most clients order it alongside a fasting lipid panel as part of a cardiovascular risk workup. No doctor referral is required. Results post to your secure online portal within 24 to 72 hours.

An hs-CRP result below 1.0 mg/L is associated with lower cardiovascular risk. Between 1.0 and 3.0 mg/L is considered average risk. Above 3.0 mg/L (without an acute illness present) is associated with higher cardiovascular risk. CRP is one of several risk markers — it is most useful when considered alongside lipid panel results, blood pressure, family history, and other cardiovascular risk factors. Results should be reviewed with a primary-care or cardiology provider.

Why people get this test

  • Cardiovascular risk assessment alongside a lipid panel
  • Investigating chronic low-grade inflammation suspected to be driving symptoms
  • Baseline before starting a dietary, exercise, or supplement protocol targeting inflammation
  • Monitoring cardiovascular risk over time in adults with intermediate Framingham risk scores
  • Adults with normal cholesterol who want a more complete cardiovascular risk picture

What to expect

From check-in to results — what your visit looks like

Most visits take under 15 minutes. Here’s the full arc, start to finish.

1

How to prepare

No fasting required for CRP alone. If you are pairing with a lipid panel or CMP, fast 8 to 12 hours (plain water OK). Take morning medications normally. Avoid intense exercise and acute illness testing — strenuous activity or active infection can significantly elevate CRP and would obscure the cardiovascular signal the test is designed to detect.

2

During your visit

A single small blood draw — one tube, completed in under 5 minutes. Most clients are in and out of the lab in 10 minutes total from check-in to walking out.

3

Getting your results

Results post to your secure online portal within 24 to 72 hours. The report includes your hs-CRP value in mg/L with the lab’s reference range and, typically, a risk tier (low, average, high). Discuss the result with a primary-care or cardiology provider in the context of your other cardiovascular risk factors — CRP is one marker in a broader risk picture.

FAQ

High-Sensitivity CRP Test — what people ask

Specific questions about the high-sensitivity crp test. For anything not covered, call 571-500-7030.

How is high-sensitivity CRP different from a regular CRP?

A regular CRP test detects levels from about 8 to 1,000 mg/L — used to detect acute inflammation from infection or injury. The high-sensitivity version can detect levels from 0.5 to 10 mg/L and is calibrated for the lower chronic inflammation associated with cardiovascular risk. They measure the same protein but serve different clinical purposes.

Should I get hs-CRP if my cholesterol is normal?

Possibly — hs-CRP can identify elevated cardiovascular risk in adults whose lipid panels appear normal. Some adults have normal LDL but elevated inflammatory markers that increase their overall cardiovascular risk. The ACC/AHA guidelines mention hs-CRP as a risk-enhancing factor to consider when risk decisions are uncertain.

Can exercise or a cold affect my CRP result?

Yes. Strenuous exercise can elevate CRP for 24 to 48 hours. Any active infection, illness, or inflammatory condition also elevates CRP significantly — often to levels that overwhelm the cardiovascular signal. Schedule the test when you are well and have not had intense exercise in the prior 24 to 48 hours for the most useful cardiovascular baseline.
