What this test screens for

Understanding the HPV (Male)

The HPV Test (Male) is an anal PCR test that detects high-risk HPV strains — including oncogenic types associated with anal cancer — in men at elevated risk. This includes men who have sex with men (MSM), men living with HIV, and immunocompromised adults.

At our Ashburn lab, the anal HPV PCR is $119 and uses an anal swab sample collected by a trained phlebotomist. No doctor referral is required. There is currently no FDA-cleared HPV test for general penile or scrotal screening in men — the anal swab is the clinically established option for HPV monitoring in high-risk populations.

A positive result indicates that high-risk HPV DNA is present in the anal canal. It does not mean cancer is present — anal HPV is common in sexually active men, and most infections clear on their own. Persistent infection, particularly in immunocompromised adults, is associated with increased risk of anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) or anal cancer over time. Results should be reviewed with a primary-care or gastroenterology provider.

Why people get this test

  • Routine anal HPV monitoring for MSM following current infectious-disease guidelines
  • HPV screening for men living with HIV or on immunosuppressive therapy
  • Monitoring for persistent high-risk HPV in adults with prior abnormal anal-cytology results
  • Peace-of-mind screening for men at elevated risk who want to know their HPV status

What to expect

From check-in to results — what your visit looks like

Most visits take under 15 minutes. Here’s the full arc, start to finish.

1

How to prepare

No fasting required. No enema or bowel prep needed. Avoid anal intercourse and rectal medications for 24 hours before the swab. No medication changes needed.

2

During your visit

Discreet check-in. A trained collector performs an anal swab in a private collection room using a brief, non-invasive technique. The process takes under 5 minutes. Most visits are 10 to 15 minutes total from check-in to walking out. Staff is trained for discretion.

3

Getting your results

Results post to your secure online portal within 3 to 5 business days. The report indicates whether high-risk HPV DNA was detected. A positive result should be reviewed with a primary-care or gastroenterology provider who can advise on appropriate follow-up — which may include anal cytology, high-resolution anoscopy, or watchful waiting depending on your clinical history.

Your results never go through your insurance carrier.

Most results in 24–72 hours through our portal.

FAQ

HPV Test (Male) — what people ask

Specific questions about the hpv test (male). For anything not covered, call 571-500-7030.

Why is there an HPV test for men when most HPV tests are for women?

Standard HPV tests are designed for cervical sampling and are not validated for penile or scrotal swabs in men. The anal HPV PCR is the clinically established option for high-risk male populations because anal cancer rates are significantly elevated in MSM and immunocompromised adults. The test helps identify persistent high-risk infection that may warrant closer monitoring.

Should I get the anal HPV test even if I have no symptoms?

HPV infection is often asymptomatic. Current infectious-disease guidelines recommend anal HPV monitoring for MSM and men living with HIV at intervals based on age and immune status. If you are in a high-risk group, testing even without symptoms allows for earlier detection of persistent high-risk strains that may benefit from follow-up.

Can a positive HPV test in men be treated?

There is no antiviral treatment to clear HPV itself. However, abnormal cell changes caused by persistent HPV (anal intraepithelial neoplasia) can be monitored and managed. HPV vaccination is also recommended through age 26 for all adults (and through age 45 in certain circumstances) — discuss vaccination status with your provider.
