What this test screens for
Understanding the HPV (High-Risk)
The HPV Test (High-Risk) uses DNA-based testing to detect the presence of high-risk human papillomavirus strains — including types 16 and 18 (which account for most HPV-related cancers) as well as other oncogenic types. The test does not report on low-risk strains associated with genital warts.
At our Ashburn lab, the high-risk HPV test is $129 and uses a swab sample. No doctor referral is required. The test is appropriate for adults who want to know whether a high-risk HPV strain is present — often used in conjunction with or following a Pap smear result, for new-partner screening, or as part of routine cervical-health monitoring.
A positive high-risk HPV result does not mean cancer — it means a high-risk strain is present. Most HPV infections clear on their own within 1 to 2 years. Persistent high-risk infection, particularly with types 16 and 18, is associated with increased long-term cancer risk. Results should be reviewed with a gynecology or primary-care provider for appropriate follow-up. We provide a printable lab report you can share with any provider.

What to expect
From check-in to results — what your visit looks like
Most visits take under 15 minutes. Here’s the full arc, start to finish.
How to prepare
No fasting required. Avoid douching, vaginal creams or medicines, and sexual intercourse for 24 to 48 hours before the swab collection for the most accurate result. No medication changes needed.
During your visit
Discreet check-in. A trained collector performs a brief swab in a private collection room. The process takes under 5 minutes. No pelvic exam is included — this is a swab for laboratory DNA testing only. Most visits are 10 minutes total from check-in to walking out.
Getting your results
Results post to your secure online portal within 3 to 5 business days. The report indicates whether high-risk HPV DNA was detected and, where the panel includes genotyping, whether types 16 and 18 are present. A positive result does not indicate cancer — discuss next steps with a gynecology or primary-care provider who can advise on appropriate follow-up (repeat testing, colposcopy, or watchful waiting depending on your history).
Confidential
Your results never go through your insurance carrier.
Transparent
Price you see is price you pay.
Fast

Doctor’s order
Included as part of every visit. No referral needed.
FAQ
HPV Test (High-Risk) — what people ask
Specific questions about the hpv test (high-risk). For anything not covered, call 571-500-7030.
If I test positive for high-risk HPV, does that mean I have cancer?
No. A positive high-risk HPV result means a high-risk strain is present in the sample. Most HPV infections resolve on their own without causing cancer. Persistent infection — particularly with types 16 and 18 — increases long-term risk over years and decades. A positive result should be discussed with a gynecology or primary-care provider to determine appropriate follow-up.
Is HPV testing different from a Pap smear?
Yes. A Pap smear looks for abnormal cervical cells. HPV testing detects the presence of HPV DNA. They answer different questions and are often used together (co-testing). An HPV test alone does not substitute for a Pap smear, and vice versa. Many clinical guidelines recommend co-testing every 5 years for adults 30 and older.
Can men get this HPV test?
This specific test (cervical swab for high-risk HPV) is designed for samples from the cervix. There is no FDA-cleared HPV test for general genital screening in men. Men concerned about anal HPV exposure should see the HPV Test (Male) — an anal PCR for high-risk strains used in men at elevated risk.
