What this test screens for

Understanding the Hepatitis A, B & C Panel

The Hepatitis A, B & C Panel screens for all three major forms of viral hepatitis from a single blood draw. The panel includes hepatitis A IgM and IgG antibodies (distinguishing active from past infection), hepatitis B surface antigen and surface antibody (infection status and immunity), and hepatitis C antibody (exposure screening).

At our Ashburn lab, the comprehensive hepatitis panel is $129 — significantly less than ordering the three panels separately. No doctor referral is required. Fasting is not needed. Results post to your secure online portal within 24 to 72 hours.

Viral hepatitis is frequently asymptomatic for years, which means many people carry an infection or have reduced immunity without knowing it. The panel is appropriate for adults who have not been previously tested, are in higher-risk groups, or want to verify immunity before or after vaccination.

Why people get this test

  • No prior hepatitis screening and wanting a complete baseline
  • Verifying hepatitis B immunity (especially before international travel to endemic regions)
  • After potential exposure — new sexual partner, shared needles, occupational exposure
  • Pre-pregnancy or prenatal screening (hepatitis B can transmit to newborns)
  • Routine screening for adults with certain risk factors (birth 1945–1965 for hepatitis C per CDC guidance)
  • Checking immunity status after hepatitis B vaccination

FAQ

Hepatitis A, B & C Panel — what people ask

Specific questions about the hepatitis a, b & c panel. For anything not covered, call 571-500-7030.

What does it mean if my hepatitis B surface antigen is positive?

A positive hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) indicates active hepatitis B infection — the virus is present in your blood. This is different from a positive surface antibody (HBsAb), which indicates immunity from vaccination or prior resolved infection. Active HBsAg requires follow-up with a primary-care or gastroenterology provider for additional testing and management.

I was vaccinated against hepatitis B. Should I still get this panel?

The panel includes a hepatitis B surface antibody test, which confirms whether you developed protective immunity from vaccination. A significant number of people do not develop full immunity after the standard three-dose vaccine series. If you are unsure of your status or need documentation, the panel is the most complete way to verify.

Is hepatitis C curable?

Yes — modern direct-acting antiviral treatments (DAAs) cure more than 95% of hepatitis C cases with an 8 to 12 week oral medication course. Early detection and treatment prevent the long-term liver damage associated with chronic infection. A positive hepatitis C antibody result should be confirmed with a hepatitis C RNA (viral load) test and reviewed with a gastroenterology or infectious-disease provider.
