Three different panels
Allergy vs. sensitivity — pick the right test for your symptoms
Allergy testing and food sensitivity testing measure different antibodies and answer different questions. Use this guide to pick — or call us and we’ll help based on your symptoms.
Environmental allergy panel
Screens common Northern Virginia pollens, tree and grass species, mold spores, animal dander, and dust mites. Useful for seasonal symptoms or year-round respiratory issues.
Food allergy panel
Screens the most common food allergens — peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, egg, soy, wheat, shellfish, fish — for true IgE-mediated allergies (immediate reactions, hives, anaphylaxis).
Food sensitivity (IgG)
Separate from allergy testing. Measures delayed-reaction IgG antibodies to foods. Useful for clients investigating chronic, milder symptoms that don’t fit a classic allergy pattern.

How it works
Single blood draw, no skin pricks, no medication washout
Our allergy testing measures specific IgE antibodies in your blood for each allergen on the panel. Unlike skin-prick tests an allergist might perform, you do not need to stop antihistamines beforehand — antihistamines block skin reactions but do not affect circulating IgE antibodies. Bring photo ID and walk in any day during open hours.
Results give a positive/negative for each allergen along with a numeric IgE value that helps clinicians interpret severity. Higher numbers generally indicate stronger sensitization. Discuss results with a primary-care provider or allergist for clinical interpretation — allergy testing on its own does not diagnose; it contributes one important piece of information.
Children can be tested at our Ashburn lab; the single needle stick is often gentler than a multi-prick skin test. Call ahead so we can plan for a pediatric draw with the right tube sizes and a trained pediatric phlebotomist.
FAQ
Allergy testing questions, answered
Common questions about IgE allergy panels. Don’t see yours? Call us at 571-500-7030.
What is the difference between allergy testing and food sensitivity testing?
Allergy testing measures IgE antibodies — the immediate-reaction antibodies behind classic allergic responses (hives, itching, anaphylaxis). Food sensitivity testing measures IgG antibodies, which reflect delayed and milder reactions. We offer both as separate panels.
Do I need to stop antihistamines before an allergy blood test?
No. Blood-based IgE allergy testing is not affected by antihistamines — unlike the skin-prick tests an allergist might perform. You can continue your normal medications and supplements before your blood draw.
What can I test for — food, environmental, or both?
Both. We offer environmental allergy panels (pollens, molds, animal dander, dust mites), food allergy panels (the most common food allergens), and combination panels. Tell us at booking which you want or call for guidance based on your symptoms.
Is allergy blood testing accurate?
Allergy blood testing (specific IgE or "RAST" testing) is well-established and widely used. Results give a positive/negative for each allergen along with a numeric IgE level that helps clinicians interpret severity. False-positive and false-negative results can occur — discuss results with an allergist for clinical interpretation.
Can I test my child for allergies at your Ashburn lab?
Yes. Allergy blood testing is age-appropriate for children — call ahead so we can plan for a pediatric blood draw. The single-needle blood test is often preferred for kids over the multi-prick skin test.
